Baptisms

BEING BAPTISED AT ST CUTHBERT'S

Baptism is the start of the Christian journey. Of itself it does not make you a Christian, but it opens the door to the life God wants us to lead.

Baptism does this in a number of ways :-

  • · It acknowledges God’s grace freely given to your child, an individual within his/her family.
  • · It allows us to give thanks to God for the birth of your child.
  • · It allows you, and the Godparents, to declare publicly that you are going to support your child on his/her Christian journey.
  • · It starts your child on the way to Confirmation, acknowledging the declarations for themselves, receiving Holy Communion and thereby becoming a committed Christian.

CAN OUR CHILD BE BAPTISED?

Baptism is free and would normally take place in your local Parish Church. **

At St Cuthbert's, Baptism Services take place on the first Sunday each month

At each of these services we only take 2 baptism bookings. The numbers of guests permitted to attend are limited to 50 for each baptism party.

Each December, the diary for the following year's bookings open. When the dates are full, the diary will close until the following December when bookings can be made for the following year.

**To check if your address comes under our Parish, you can view the list by clicking 'Roads in the Parish'. Alternatively, you can find your nearest church by visiting the website ‘a church near you’ and entering your address.

Please feel free to contact the Rector or church office if you need any additional information concerning baptism for your child.

I WASN'T BAPTISED AS A CHILD. IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE BAPTISED AS AN ADULT?

YES, it is possible at St Cuthbert’s. As an adult you would have a sponsor to stand alongside you rather than Godparents speaking for you. Also adult Baptism would normally be followed by Confirmation (see more information about Confirmation).
